Grizabella

Grizabella is an old and dilapidated cat that was once a part of the Jellicle tribe. She was once young and beautiful and curious. She wanted to explore the world outside the junkyard. She fell upon some hard times and became a prostitute. Now, many years later, she wants to return to the loving circle of her family. But there is a feeling within the tribe that once you leave, or desert, the tribe, you can never return. Grizabella tries time and time again to come back, but each time she is rejected. Victoria, a young, white cat, tries to touch Grizabella but is always frightened away by the older cats.

Finally, on her last attempt, Grizabella pleads with the cats to accept her. In her singing of 'Memory' she explains to the others what she has been through. She collapses on the ground and Jemima's singing gives her the strength to stand and finish singing. Jemima reminds her of when she was young and beautiful, too.

Finally, Victoria is allowed to touch Grizabella, and the others accept her. It is Grizabella who is chosen to go to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn to a new life.
